Planning for life with a baby is a lot and when it comes to all the things you need, it can be difficult to know where to start. We speak to our clever friends Phoebe Simmonds and Kate Casey from the memo for their tips on everything you need for a happy life with a baby.

We get the wedding registry but gift registries for babies. When did this become a thing?

I think when expecting parents started to feel there was a better way! Gift registries exist to minimise waste and maximise ease. With a gift registry, you can guarantee that you’ll get exactly what you want, will use and love. No double ups, no confusion. I know that in Australia, some people are still resistant to the idea of ‘asking for stuff’. But really, gift registries make life easier for everyone. You’re going to be showered in love and gifts, why not ensure you actually get what you want? As someone who has bought a ton of baby gifts in my time, I find it so much easier and time saving to buy from a registry, knowing that what I’m giving will actually be used and will add value to my friend’s life.  

Why do you think baby registries are becoming more popular?

We’re busy and want to make life easier for everyone, particularly when a baby is involved! And we’re overwhelmed with clutter. The trend is to move towards a more minimalist, considered life. 

Speaking of trends, what are the key trends when it comes to registries?

Practicality. You can still expect some friends and family to show up on your doorstep with a cute little baby’s outfit or a snuggly toy. But by setting up a registry, you can guarantee receiving those items you’ll actually rely on every day, so we’re seeing a lot of smart expecting parents think functionality first, like an ear thermometer, room monitor, portable bathtub, bottle steriliser, rocker, carrier. Maybe not as cute, but essential and important.

What are the five must-have items on any registry?

Every newborn needs a swaddle bag, some bedding, a bath or bath rest, a change mat, and a play mat.

What advice do you have for expecting/ new parents when it comes to selecting items?

Think a mix between low-priced point essentials like nappies, muslin wraps, pram pegs and hooded towels, and then those bigger gear items that friends and family might like to gift together, like a pram or cot.

Basic newborn clothing that can be easily layered, like singlets and body suits (you’ll need at least six of each), pairs of socks (start with three) and hats and layers (two of each). A good one for registries so you get the style/ print/ design that you actually like.

And don’t forget you! A beautiful loungewear set, Ice and Heat packs to ease your recovery, and a gorgeous nappy bag.

We also recommend some items beyond newborn. Consider the items that you’re going to need when your baby starts teething and eating solids, like a teether, plate set, freezer pods and sippy cup.
